We recently took a holiday to Bali — a well-earned break, but also a chance to reflect on what’s happening closer to home. As we explored the island, it was impossible not to draw comparisons between Bali’s mature tourism infrastructure and the exciting, still-unfolding story of Zanzibar.
Bali has been a top global destination for decades. It’s polished, accessible, and built-out — from its wide range of international hotels to its buzzing café culture and luxury wellness retreats. It’s a prime example of what happens when tourism and development align with global demand.
Zanzibar, by contrast, is just getting started — but it’s following a strikingly similar trajectory. With increased international attention, investment in infrastructure, and a growing appetite for both luxury and adventure travel, the island is evolving fast. You can already see echoes of early Bali in Zanzibar’s east coast villages, where boutique resorts and high-end residences are replacing sleepy shorelines.
But in many ways, Zanzibar has an edge. The beaches here are, quite simply, better — longer, quieter, and more pristine, with powder-white sand and turquoise water that rivals anywhere in the world. And for investors, there’s another major advantage: unlike in Bali, foreigners in Zanzibar can hold direct title to villas within condominium developments, offering security and transparency that’s rare in comparable destinations.
The key question: Can the growth continue?
From our perspective — absolutely. Zanzibar still has vast untapped potential.
The government is increasingly supportive of foreign investment, and the island’s natural beauty and cultural richness offer a unique draw that hasn’t yet reached saturation.
The comparisons with Bali aren’t just wishful thinking — they offer a glimpse of what could be, if development is managed sustainably and inclusively.
For investors, second-home buyers, or those simply watching from afar, it’s an exciting time. Zanzibar isn’t “the next Bali” — it’s on its own path. But having seen both up close, we can confidently say: the future here is bright.
